Blue Cats Tea Set

Isabella Stewart Gardner traveled extensively throughout Asia, shaping the Museum's collection of East Asian art. During her travels, Gardner was introduced to Japanese art historian and philosopher Okakura Kakuzo (1862-1913) with whom she would maintain a rich and intriguing friendship. In 1910, Gardner gave Okakura a snow white Angora cat named Kowun ("Lonesome Cloud"). When Okakura returned to Japan in 1911, the cat was given to Dodge Macknight, a mutual friend of Okakura and Gardner. Okakura would frequently write letters to his feline friend, enclosed in letters to Mrs. Gardner.

To honor the long-distance friendship between pet and philosopher, we present this midnight blue cat tea set inspired by Kowun and Okakura. The set includes one 18 ounce teapot with removable bamboo handle, two 4 ounce cups, a stainless steal mesh tea basket.
