Maurizio Cannacacciuolo: A Lecture on Martian History Print

This print was created from a photograph of a painting by Maurizio Cannacacciuolo (Artist-in-Residence, 2003) to commemorate the ephemeral site-specific work titled A Lecture on Martian History, installed on the Anne H. Fitzpatrick Façade from June 2016 to January 2017.A native of Naples, Maurizio Cannavacciuolo lived and traveled extensively in Asia, especially India and Thailand. His art explores the overlap and divergence of cultural influences in contemporary society.
Isabella Stewart Gardner’s passion for the sumptuous look and feel of textiles can be felt throughout the Museum. She surrounded works of art with fabrics of different colors and patterns, creating particular moods for each installation. Maurizio Cannavacciuolo, too, treats patterns and color in a very eclectic fashion. Designs inspired by Edo textiles from Japan and Cuban tiles from Old Havana in this Façade are all part of the artist’s multicultural vision. The elaborately overlapping drawings and patterns relate a science fiction narrative, drawing on cultural trivia, emotion, and aesthetics to deliver a witty and provocative message about life, culture, and consumption in the 21st century.
In this installation, the colonization of Earth by Martians is told generations later by a many-armed teacher, the product of Human-Martian interbreeding. In the early years of the invasion, when the Martians entered the empty Human houses, they discovered flickering television sets. They were fascinated by the hypnotic, repetitive images, white noise, and static emitted by the blank screens. The Television becomes a Martian cult object. Five vignettes tell a part of the story including a scene set in a fictional performance hall at the Gardner Museum.
Cannavacciuolo first came to the Gardner Museum in 2003 as an Artist-in-Residence. He returned in February 2004 and spent five weeks creating TV Dinner, an elaborate two-part wall drawing in the Museum’s special exhibition gallery. He is the eighth artist to be invited to design artwork for the Anne H. Fitzpatrick Façade.
There are one hundred numbered prints in the edition.

Images like El Jaleo lean toward the daring, risky, unconventional, dramatic, erotically off-center, and odd. Because nomadic groups were believed to ignore ethical principles and exalted superstition over orthodox religion, they endured oppression in numerous countries during the nineteenth century, but artists and bohemians idealized them as free spirits. Bizet's opera Carmen, first performed in Paris in 1875, scandalized the public with its tale of a proud, lusty Andalusian protagonist torn between an army officer and a toreador.
During his travels in Spain in 1879, Sargent was mulling over a major work of art in which he could express his love of Romani music, dance, and picturesque costumes. On his return to Paris, he set to work on a wide horizontal picture whose proportions simulated the shallow stage space of popular musical establishments. He named the painting El Jaleo to suggest the name of a dance, the jaleo de jerez, while counting on the broader definition of jaleo, which includes ruckus or hubbub. The painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1882 with the more explicit title El Jaleo: Danse des gitanes (Dance of the Gypsies).
The best evidence of his own excited reactions to live dance performances can be found in the pencil sketches of a Spanish woman that he included in an album assembled for Isabella Stewart Gardner. They are among his fastest, most intuitive works. In one drawing, a torrent of fast hard lines suggests the twisting shawl from which a majestic neck and outstretched vamping arms emerge.

Mrs. Gardner sat for Sargent during his visit to Boston in January 1888. He was paid $3000 for the portrait, which was exhibited to great acclaim at Boston’s St. Botolph Club. The work also inspired gossip and legend: someone jokingly titled it “Woman: An Enigma,” while others believed that the sensuous display of flesh deliberately echoed the scandal recently created by Sargent’s Madame X. Mrs. Gardner herself said that she rejected eight renderings of the face until she was satisfied.
Jack Gardner seems to have asked his wife not to publicly show the portrait again while he was alive, and indeed the portrait was placed in the Gothic Room, which remained private until Mrs. Gardner’s death.
In its gallery, surrounded by altarpieces, stained glass, and religious statuary, the sacramental quality noted by nineteenth-century reviewers is even more pronounced.

Kronberg was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1872. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, at the Art Students' League and at Julian's in Paris. Kronberg was keenly interested in the stage and painted many prominent theater people. Late in her life, Kronberg became Mrs. Gardner's friend and assisted her in several of her last purchases.

On one of his spring visits to the Museum, Arthur Pope, a color theorist and professor of art at Harvard University, painted the annual spring display of bright orange flowering nasturtium vines. Isabella grew the plants at her home Green Hill, in Brookline, Massachusetts and hung them in the Courtyard around her birthday, April 14, a tradition which continues today.

Rembrandt's most striking narrative painting in America, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee, is also his only painted seascape. Dated 1633, it was made shortly after Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam from his native Leiden, when he was establishing himself as the city's leading painter of portraits and historical subjects. The detailed rendering of the scene, the figures' varied expressions, the relatively polished brushwork, and the bright coloring are characteristic of Rembrandt's early style. Eighteenth-century critics like Arnold Houbraken often preferred this early period to Rembrandt's later, broader, and less descriptive manner.

Votive Stele

Among the collection of Chinese Buddhist sculptures in the Gardner Museum’s Chinese Loggia is the limestone Votive Stele. This notable piece--dating from 543--was purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the Russian art collector Victor Goloubew in July 1914, via Mrs. Gardner’s chief art advisor Bernard Berenson. The front of the stele presents in high relief the Buddha Sakyamuni in the center, whose right hand is held in the “fearless gesture” (abhaya mudra) and his left hand in the “charity gesture” (vara mudra). He is attended by the young disciple Ananda and the old disciple Kasyapa, both with shaven heads and attired in monastic robes. The Buddha is further flanked by the bodhisattva Maitreya to his right, who holds a flask, and the bodhisattva Manjusri to his left. The two bodhisattvas respectively embody Compassion and Wisdom. The iconic ensemble as such, unique in China, gained currency in the early sixth century.
The universal salvation advocated by the Lotus Sutra is further dramatized in the scene carved in low relief on the back of the stele, based on the chapter “The Emergence of Many-Treasure Stupa.” The Buddha Sakyamuni, about to enter Nirvana, or the “Great Extinction,” joins Prabhutaratna, the ancient Buddha from the past and distant land, in the latter’s stupa, which hovers in the air. Sakyamuni then transports the entire ensemble witnessing the spectacle into Buddha’s realms.This miniature resin reproduction of the stele honors both the work itself and the Asian art within the Gardner Museum’s collection. Fleece Throw: El Jaleo

The idea for this dramatic installation dates from 1914, when Gardner decided to remodel this side of the museum. She replaced the two-story music room that originally occupied this space with three galleries on the first floor (the Spanish Chapel, Spanish Cloister, and Chinese Loggia) and the spacious Tapestry Room on the second floor. Remarkably, El Jaleo didn’t even belong to Gardner at this point—it was owned by her relative through marriage, T. Jefferson Coolidge. When Coolidge saw the extraordinary custom-made setting, he apparently gave her the painting on the spot.

John Appleton Brown was a landscape painted and pastellist who had studied in France with Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875). Brown established himself in a Boston studio in 1875 and concentrated upon creating poetic and pastoral depictions of the New England landscape. In Garden of Poppies, Brown employs a bright pallet to create the freshness of poet Celia Thaxter's Appledore Island garden.

In 1892, an ancient villa was discovered just north of Rome, near the villa of Augustus’s wife, Livia. Several well-preserved mosaic floors adorned the baths of the villa. Jack and Isabella Gardner inspected the mosaics in 1895 and purchased this floor in 1897. The delicate tracery of this mosaic resembles those made in Pompeii around 25 AD (the late second or third style), but brick stamps indicate that it was laid a century later, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian.
