Porcelain Lithophane Victorian Lamp Stand

Lithophanes were invented in France in 1827, and remained popular throughout Europe untill the early 1900s. When lit from behind, the light shining through the different thicknesses of the porcelain causes a highly detailed image to appear in front, almost magically. The illuminated image is so detailed that it has an almost photographic quality! The relief of the carving gives the image a 3-dimensional quality in person.

The creation process begins with carving the image in a translucent wax, with the wax lit from behind. Next, a plaster mold of the engraving is created and a fine porcelain clay is cast into the mold. Then porcelain is kiln-fired to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit to achieve translucency and ensure durability.

This design is inspired by the Art Nouveau/Belle Epoque era, a time of opulence, optimism, and prosperity. The warm and rich organic curvilinear shapes have a soothing and peaceful quality. A perfect lamp to create this same comforting atmosphere in your home.
