Rebozo Tunic

Carla Fernández (Artist-in-Residence, 2013) is a Mexico City-based fashion label inspired by the geometrics and textile richness of Mexico. The brand has gained international acclaim for their approach to preserving the rich cultural heritage of Mexico’s indigenous communities and transforming it into beautiful clothing, textiles and housewares. Their contemporary take on handcrafted methods is proving ethical fashion can be striking, avant-garde and forward-looking.

The rebozo is one of the most characteristic garments in Mexico. It is worn by men and women for loading and transporting goods. This unique garment can be worn in many ways, including as a jacket, vest or a poncho. The jacket is made of rebozo weaved on pedal loom and hand-dyed using the Ikat technique. Weather permitting, each rebozo piece is made in a month and a half, as rain and humidity can delay the production process. This unique iteration of a rebozo-inspired tunic features hand-embroidered detail on the garment's front neckline.

The dyeing technique used in Tenancingo is called jasper or ikat. The process consists of crafting knots along the weft threads, which creates thousands of designs by isolating the color during the dyeing process; later, the canvases are woven on a pedal loom.
