Porcelain Lithophane Victorian Lamp

$7800

Lithophanes were invented in France in 1827, and remained popular throughout Europe untill the early 1900s. When the lamp's light shines through the different thicknesses of the porcelain, a highly detailed image appears almost magically. The illuminated image is so detailed that it has an almost photographic quality! The relief of the carving gives the image a 3-dimensional quality in person.

The creation process begins with carving the image in a translucent wax, with the wax lit from behind. Next, a plaster mold of the engraving is created and a fine porcelain clay is cast into the mold. Then porcelain is kiln-fired to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit to achieve translucency and ensure durability.

This design is inspired by the Art Nouveau/Belle Epoque era, a time of opulence, optimism, and prosperity. The warm and rich organic curvilinear shapes have a soothing and peaceful quality. A perfect lamp to create this same comforting atmosphere in your home.
