Francois Boucher (French, 1703 - 1770), The Chariot of Venus, 18th centuryPainter to King Louis XV, François Boucher defined artistic tastes at the French court. He is best known for mythological paintings like this one, the compositions of which reached audiences far and wide through tapestry, porcelain, and print.
Gardner purchased this painting from Wildenstein and Co., venerable dealers of French art. She paid a fraction of the price of her most expensive Italian paintings. Gardner collected few Rococo works; perhaps she sought to fill the void in her collection with this one. It was installed in the Little Salon by 1912, along with a second painting of similar style and an embroidery made from Boucher’s designs, an apparent homage to the French master.

The Iznik tiles of the second half of the sixteenth century are justly famous for their bright tomato-red color, which together with black, blue, turquoise, and green were painted in underglaze colors on the flawless white ground. This tile is unusual in several respects: it uses black in large amounts, the most important elements of the field have been quartered in the corners of the tile, and no other tiles from this panel have yet come to light. It is believed that this tile, now affixed in the Spanish Cloister of the Gardner Museum, was created as part of a large set for an unknown mosque or palace.

In 1892, an ancient villa was discovered just north of Rome, near the villa of Augustus’s wife, Livia. Several well-preserved mosaic floors adorned the baths of the villa. Jack and Isabella Gardner inspected the mosaics in 1895 and purchased this floor in 1897. The delicate tracery of this mosaic resembles those made in Pompeii around 25 AD (the late second or third style), but brick stamps indicate that it was laid a century later, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian.
