Japanese Cranes 10" Mouse Pad

The swirling bird imagery seen on this mouse pad is from a fragment of L. 19th c. Japanese silk garment fabric in the museum’s collection.  The hand-painted silk would have been used in the making of a kimono or sash (obi).  Mrs. Gardner visited Japan in 1883 and documented the trip in a travel album.  Whether she collected this silk fragment during her trip is unknown.
