AAPI Heritage Collection

May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, a time when we honor AAPI heritage and pay tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history.

Isabella Stewart Gardner had a great appreciation for Asian art that grew over her lifetime as she began to travel more and expand her collection. Consulting Curator Nancy Berliner writes "She, like all of us, was always learning and evolving, noticing new sites and having new insights." Museum of Fine Arts Curator of Japanese and Chinese art Okakura Kakuzo further enriched Gardner’s understanding of Asian culture, religion and art.

Curated in celebration of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage and the influence of AAPI art on the Museum's past and present, Gift at the Gardner presents the AAPI Heritage Collection. Our collection includes book offerings for all ages that explore the lives of Asian and Pacific Islanders. The AAPI Heritage collection features artwork from two of the Gardner's Artists-in Residence: Taiwanese-American contemporary artist Lee Mingwei and Chinese-American choreographer, painter, and director Shen Wei.

Usable graphite objects handcrafted by featured artist Agelio Batle and bespoke bronze and porcelain home décor from Danny's Fine Porcelain round out our collection.

Lee Mingwei: The Living Room

Lee Mingwei's simple yet elegant installations provide a stage for interpersonal exchange around ordinary human events or activities–admiring an object, making conversation, or writing a letter to a friend or family member.

His installations such as The Dining Project and The Letter-Writing Project are explored along with a project developed while an artist-in-residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum called The Living Room. Lee Mingwei: Trilogy of Sound

Mona Higuchi: Bamboo Echoes

Born of Japanese and Korean descent, Mona Higuchi is an American artist whose work speaks quietly of dislocation, identity and history.

Her 1996 exhibition, Bamboo Echoes: A New Work by Mona Higuchi Dedicated to the Comfort Woman, blended Higuchi's research on both Isabella Stewart Gardner's Second Chinese Room, which was dismantled in the 1970s, and the Korean Comfort Woman who were forced by the Japanese army into sexual slavery during World War II. The installation drew its viewers in to the gallery through a narrow doorway of form, shape and light. Once there, they began a quiet journey as silent histories were revealed.

This catalog documents Higuchi's work and poignant installation. It includes texts by curator Jill Medvedow and Alice Yun Hai, a leading expert on the history of the Comfort Women.

Madame Butterfly Ornament

Tamaki Miura (1884-1946) was the first internationally celebrated Japanese soprano. After training in her native Japan and in Europe, Miura was cast in the title role of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly in London in 1915. Acclaimed for her performances, Miura toured the United States to reprise her role for American audiences. Gardner was a great fan of the opera and friend to many singers; the fact that she collected a photographic portrait of Miura denotes her admiration for the path-breaking soprano.

Votive Stele

Among the collection of Chinese Buddhist sculptures in the Gardner Museum’s Chinese Loggia  is the limestone Votive Stele. This notable piece--dating from 543--was purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the Russian art collector Victor Goloubew in July 1914, via Mrs. Gardner’s chief art advisor Bernard Berenson. The front of the stele presents in high relief the Buddha Sakyamuni in the center, whose right hand is held in the “fearless gesture” (abhaya mudra) and his left hand in the “charity gesture” (vara mudra). He is attended by the young disciple Ananda and the old disciple Kasyapa, both with shaven heads and attired in monastic robes. The Buddha is further flanked by the bodhisattva Maitreya to his right, who holds a flask, and the bodhisattva Manjusri to his left. The two bodhisattvas respectively embody Compassion and Wisdom. The iconic ensemble as such, unique in China, gained currency in the early sixth century.

The universal salvation advocated by the Lotus Sutra is further dramatized in the scene carved in low relief on the back of the stele, based on the chapter “The Emergence of Many-Treasure Stupa.” The Buddha Sakyamuni, about to enter Nirvana, or the “Great Extinction,” joins Prabhutaratna, the ancient Buddha from the past and distant land, in the latter’s stupa, which hovers in the air. Sakyamuni then transports the entire ensemble witnessing the spectacle into Buddha’s realms.

This miniature resin reproduction of the stele honors both the work itself and the Asian art within the Gardner Museum’s collection. It is the perfect objet d’arte for your home and office.
